Free multiplayer games to play right now

Multiplayer games are bigger than ever. Especially the games that can be played for free. They are so big, that they accounted for 80% of the total digital games revenue in 2018.

Whether you want to spent some time with friends or show strangers what you’re made of in a competitive game. Multiplayer games are the perfect place for that.

Playing against humans will always be more exciting, satisfying and rewarding than competing against an AI. The following games in this list are geared towards players, which are looking for fun multiplayer games without having to reach in your wallet.

Apex Legends

After a surprise launch and a great start millions of players rushed through Kings Canyon to fight other players in teams of three, while simultaneously running from the deadly “Circle”. Only one team can leave the arena as champions, only to jump right back into the action as an attempt to keep the champion status.

After a disappointing first season with a lackluster “Battle Pass”, Respawn Entertainment tried their best to make a comeback with season two. With the help and feedback of players they not only improved the rewards of the “Battle Pass” but also revised the leveling functionality to make it easier and faster to level up.

The perfect time to jump back into action to experience the completely new map locations as well as the new legend Watson is right now.

Warframe

Warframe has always been a great game on the free-to-play market. With ever-increasing player numbers and a truly active development team you can’t do anything wrong by joining the Warframe community. In this third-person shooter you control members of the Tenno, a race of ancient warriors, to fight against different factions.

Latest major updates introduced open world areas to the game where you can participate in different activities like fishing, mining and collecting bounties.

During Tennocon 2019 a new update was revealed which features an upgrade-able spacecraft inspired by “FTL: Faster Than Light”. Once the update is released, players will be able to populate the ship with non-playable characters, customize the ship and upgrade it.

If you are looking for a fun coop game to enjoy with your friends, this is exactly what you are looking for.

League of Legends

League of Legends dominated the free-to-play multiplayer market for a very long time, so it definitely deserves to be on this list. If you haven’t heard of this game yet, be sure to give it a try. In this highly competitive MOBA game, two teams of five fight against each other and try to destroy their opponents base.

With 100 million active players a month and a huge competitive e-sports community this is the perfect game to sink thousands of hours into.

War Thunder

Have you ever wondered what it was like on the battlefields of World War II? Look no further than War Thunder. Hop in a plane, a tank or your favorite ship and experience large scale battles. Pick between a variety of nations including the Soviet Union, Germany, the United Kingdom, Japan, France, Italy, the United States and China.

War Thunder definitely takes some time to get into, but if you like vehicular combat in other games like Battlefield, you should give it a try. It’s free after all.

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive

As one of the most played games on Steam and an ever growing e-sports community. Counter-Strike: Global Offensive has to be on this list. Granted it was not a free multiplayer game for the majority of its lifespan, but since December 2018 Valve decided to transition to a free-to-play model, focusing on revenue from cosmetic items.

Many games have tried to push Counter-Strike off its throne without success. For many years Counter-Strike: Global Offensive has been at the top of competitive first person shooters. No game comes even close to the impact this games has had on the development of e-sports.

So if you are looking for a competitive free multiplayer shooter and would like to climb the ladder all the way up to “Global Elite”, CS GO is definitely the way to go.

PlanetSide 2

Has the Battlefield franchise let you down in the past couple of years and you miss the feeling of just being a small soldier in a large scale battle? PlanetSide 2 is exactly that, but way bigger. Hop into this timeless free multiplayer classic from 2012 and fight in a battle of up to 2000 players on one map. That’s right! Two thousand people organize in a massive war between continents. You are able to choose between ground combat in vehicles or as an individual soldier and air combat.

Teamfight Tactics

Teamfight Tactics is a round-based strategy game recently released by Riot Games. Fight against seven opponents in a free-for-all game mode. In this game you have to build a powerful team of AI champions that fight for you. Want to hear the best part? Teamfight Tactics is a great game for starters in the gaming world, because it focuses more on tactical thinking rather than reaction-based gameplay.

With League of Legends it has been another great success for Riot Games. So expect much future support and active development for Teamfight Tactics.

Fortnite

Last but not least, Fortnite by Epic Games. Whether you like it or not, the free battle royale mode of Fortnite has achieved tremendous success. As the top earner in the free-to-play market, it made its creators $2.4 billion richer and for that reason alone it just has to be on this list.

Fortnite is a free-to-play third-person shooter. Like Apex Legends you and 99 others are fighting to be the one and only winner, while simultaneously running from the storm. What makes this game unique and different from all the other free multiplayer battle royale games you ask? You can not only shoot your opponents but can also defend yourself by gathering resources and building structures with Fortnites highly praised building feature.

If you can endure the cartoonish looking style, this could be a fitting game for you. And remember to thank the bus driver!
